Heavy Smoke Expected in Mitchell County

Smoke from a wildfire on Dobson Knob in northern McDowell County is expected to drift into the mountain counties of Western North Carolina.

NORTH COVE, N. C. — Heavy smoke from a McDowell County wildfire is expected to affect Mitchell County.

Smoke from a wildfire on Dobson Knob, located in northern McDowell County, has started to drift into Mitchell and other Western North Carolina counties, and officials expect more smoke to drift into the area as personnel battle the fire. Mitchell County communities that will be the most affected are Altapass, Grassy Creek, and Little Switzerland.

The fire was first reported Sunday afternoon, April 9, 2017. As of Thursday morning, April 13, the fire had consumed around 1,405 acres.The fire is 15 percent contained and has burned more than 2 square miles thus far. Volunteer firefighters and McDowell County Emergency Management are working to battle the fire, which is burning on private and United States Forest Service property.

According to U.S. Forest Service spokeman Bill Swartley, 35 homes and 10 other buildings have been threatened by the fire. Firefighters are working to remove any potential fuel from around the homes that are threatened.
